All tiles have shade variations and therefore it is advisable to mix tiles from several boxes before fixing to check for an acceptable blend of colouring.  Shade and batch numbers are usually printed on the boxes by the manufacturer so ensure that they match.

HINTS ON FIXING WALL TILES

Preparation

  • Seal new walls with a sealer/primer e.g. PVA.
  • Allow at least 4 weeks for new plaster to dry before tiling.
  • Set out the horizontal position of the tiles so that even cuts are made on either side of the window and small cuts are avoided in the corners.
  • Set out the vertical position of the tiles to give a maximum amount of the tile under windows with at least half a tile showing at the ceiling line and skirting.

Fixing

  • When fixing in dry areas use a high grip ready mixed adhesive.
  • When fixing in wet areas use a waterproof ready mixed adhesive.
  • Work from a level base using a wooden batten nailed into the wall to a line marked with a spirit level.
  • Cut tiles into internal angles.
  • Start from an external angle with a full tile, except at windows.
  • Use tile trim to hide exposed edges of tiles in windows and external corners.
  • Tiles should be solidly fixed using a notched trowel.

Grouting

  • Allow 24 hours before grouting (longer if fixing to impervious surfaces).
  • When grouting dry areas a water resistant cement based grout is suitable.
  • When grouting shower areas use a water proof cement based grout.
  • When a power shower is to be installed use a flexible water proof cement based grout.

  • When fixing to marine ply or above under floor heating always use a one part adhesive.
  • Arrange tiles so that small cuts are avoided.
  • Spread the adhesive onto the floor ensuring a solid bed and using a notched trowel.
  • If necessary butter the backs of the tiles especially the corners.
  • Air must not be trapped behind the tiles.
  • Bed the tiles solidly.
  • Leave at least 3mm between each tile.

Grouting

  • When using a rapid set adhesive allow at least 4 hours before grouting.
  • When grouting tiles laid on floorboards or marine ply use a flexible floor grout.
